Mireille BlaisGalerie Jeannine Blais
For three decades, naïve artists from thirty countries have been contributing to the international reputation of Galerie Jeannine Blais, the first gallery in Canada to be entirely dedicated to naïve art. Of course, naïve artists from Quebec are featured prominently in the art gallery. The gallery has contributed significantly to the growth and awareness of naïve art in Quebec. Galerie Jeannine Blais captures the interest of collectors from all over the world. Naïve art is not a fad. It is a much deeper process which reflects a need for simplicity. Naïve art painters have a child’s gift of wonder and joy, which they translate through their own adult experiences. Running an art gallery in North Hatley’s charming scenery is more than just a business, more than a profession. Let’s put it in simple words: it is a passion...and living it intensely. The Galerie Jeannine Blais is worth a visit. In the last five years, a selection of more conventional artists has been added to its beautiful collection of art works. Mireille Blais, daughter of founder Jeannine Blais, operates the gallery. Raised in an environment of art and artists from the time since she was a child, she makes sure everything runs smoothly at the gallery. She is in charge of all exhibits that are held in the gallery as well as a number of exhibits taking place in other cultural centers. Mireille has been a volunteer at Sherbrooke’s Museum of Fine Arts since 1981. From 1993 to 1998, she was coordinator of all major events which took place at the gallery, notably the annual International Naïve Art Contest. Her work touches on every aspect of running a gallery, from talent development, book publishing, artist catalogs, and the appraisal of works of art. Mireille has developed over the years a relationship of trust with both artists and collectors.
